Well, we found out that "Mother Nature" sometimes has other plans for us and our dogs. Stikla Run (Rosie) had what is called a "silent heat" (no bleeding and no signs of heat) at the same time Belle was in season. Even though we were keeping the younger females away from Gloi, when I was switching the dogs between inside and outside, Rosie got away from me while Gloi was just coming in - and that's all it took. (Obviously Gloi wasn't fooled by a "silent heat"). Our veterinarians assured us that Rosie was big enough (she weighs 30 lbs.) to have a litter, and that it was much safer for her to have puppies than to get the mis-mate shot. So even though I had wanted to wait until Rosie was two years old and had all of her health checks, "Mother Nature" had different plans. Rosie delivered five beautiful puppies on June 19th. unassisted. She's a wonderful mother with plenty of milk for her brood of four males and one female. All five puppies have double dew claws on their back legs.
Shown below is the first born male "Lavandels Vindur" (meaning "wind"). He weighs 2 lbs. 3 oz. now at 2 weeks of age. The next born is "Lavandels Kolur" (shown at right), was the also the biggest surprise - a tricolor male! (we did not know Gloi carried the gene for tricolor). He's also the smallest puppy weighing 23 oz. at 2 weeks of age. |
